The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is a worldwide system for automated emergency signal communication for ships at sea developed by the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO).
To be eligible for the course the candidate must: –
1. Possess a valid health certificate stating good health
2. Be over 18 years.
3. Have knowledge of the English language & use of computers.
Upon completion of the course the participant would gain knowledge in the following:-
· Search and rescue radio communications including procedures in the international Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manual
· The means to prevent the transmission of false distress alerts and the procedures to mitigate the effects of such alerts
· Ship reporting systems
· Radio medical services
· Use of the International Code of Signals and the procedures to mitigate the effects of such alerts
· The provision of radio services in emergencies such as: § Abandon ship § Fire on board ship Partial or full breakdown of radio installations
