-Dialogue from the film ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’

The waves of the sea are unique and unpredictable. A wave can range from a short wave driven by the wind to large hazardous waves caused by underwater disturbances resulting in tsunamis. But humans have over the years learned to conquer the different kind of waves by building different types of ships.

In the modern world, the marine industry encompasses a wide variety of ships designed for different purposes ranging from LNG carriers and cargo ships to cruise vessels making the marine industry highly diverse and specialized. In this article we will focus on the categories of ships

Below are the major categories of ships

1. Passenger Ships

Before the advent of airplanes, passenger ships were the only means of transportation between countries separated by oceans. However Passenger ships still help transport passengers across different water bodies. They are further classified into different types depending on their size and purpose

  1. Cruise Ships- Functioning as luxurious floating hotels with facilities to keep their guests entertained.
  • Ferries- Smaller ships to transport people across short distances on water
  • Special Purpose Passenger Ships- Passenger ships that transport passenger in specific environments at sea. For eg. Artic Vessels
  • Commercial Yachts- Yachts that engage in commercial activity of transporting passengers

2. Cargo Ships

Transportation of large number of goods in one ship is what makes shipping the cheapest medium of trade as compared to planes and land vehicles. Cargo ships transport huge amount of goods of different types, between countries using different types of ships. Tankers are a sub-category of cargo ships transporting liquid cargo.

3. Fishing Vessels

Most of us imagine a fisherman’s boat as a humble boat on which a fisherman stands and throws his net hoping to catch a good amount of fish. In reality fishing vessels are much larger in size to catch and store a large amount of fish across the ocean.

In the upcoming articles we will explore in detail the different type of cargo ships since cargo ships make up majority of the maritime industry and are an attractive career option for a lot of people.
